Intentional Hate--Penalty, Loss of Game?
The statements of a Chick-Fil-A executive in opposition to gay marriage are part of a what might be seen as a corporate policy of homophobia, and perhaps a policy of trying to impose fundamentalist Christian values on it's employees. A July 27 blog post reports that a female employee with above-average performance was terminated to be a stay at home mom.
Where some of Chick-Fil-A's money goes is proof that the company may put it's money where its mouths are. A July 2 post on the Huffington Post reported that the company made $2 million dollars in contributions to anti-gay groups in 2010.
Among the groups that the company donates to is the Family Research Council, a group that the Southern Poverty Law Center declared a "hate group". Among the activities of the FRC, according to the New Civil Rights Movement, was opposing a 2010 resolution condemning Uganda for legislation that would have made homosexuality a capital crime.
Is this the type of company that the National Collegiate Athletic Association wants to be sponsoring a college bowl game; one that is one of the most lucrative, best-attended and often more exciting of the non-Bowl Championship Series games? Atlanta, Georgia, where the game once called the Peach Bowl is played has many business that would likely be willing to attach their name to the game the associated events. Delta Airlines comes to mind as a potential sponsor.
The NCAA is already reeling a bit from the Penn State child sex abuse scandal and sanctions. Does it really need another scandal to deal with?
